11th May 2018 Windsurfing: Hamworthy, Poole Harbour Wind Direction: SE Wind Stength: 15/20 Surf / Sea State: river chop Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods clouding over with rain late evening :( Max Speed: 25.30 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 17 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Friday 11th May – windsurf **** Hamworthy (Poole Harbour) sunny periods clouding over with rain late evening :( 25.30 knot max., 23.28 knot ave., 11.47 knot hour, 20.43 knot mile, 31.50 km., 13.83 knot alpha. F2 Stoke 117 + 38 cm fin + Tushingham X - 15 7m. Our third good night in the Quarry above the beautiful Kimmeridge Bay and woke to some nice sunshine but it was supposed to cloud over and rain! There seemed a nice breeze from the SE so after breakfast we headed down to Poole Harbour, stopping off at Lidl before parking up at Hamworthy - a great spot to sail surrounded by terrific scenery:) After a warning from a local we made sure all our van wheels were in the parking spot as a couple of cars had been ticketed because they were only very slightly out, some right jobs worth having a bad day:( There were already several out enjoying a good breeze, cross on from the left. As it was coming around Brownsea Island it was always going to be a little gusty so rig choice was the first consideration? A sailor came in and said he was fine with 6.5 so got that and my 7m out of the top box. Then the two brothers we previously met at Portland came ashore to change up from 5.8 to 7 so I rigged the 7. Leaving Mag to sort out the carpark ticket, only £2 so a real bargain I headed out for over an hour it was really good, it got a bit patchy either side but great fun even if a little lumpy in the channel. I beat up towards Brownsea Island to get the longest run and enjoyed sailing through the moored yachts and out to an inlet on the far bank over a mile away. In fact, I got some nice mile runs in. There were a couple of yachts moored in the far creek so I sailed as far up there as possible but it became shallow and you got a bad wind shadow from the island. Once, on dropping in, Danny, one of the brothers, stopped for a chat and said that one of my friends, Keith Farmer who sails at Point Clear, was a friend of his brother, what a small world! The wind eased so I headed back to the van for lunch and Mag had prepared yet another yummy bacon salad, I also had a cuppa to warm up as it is a bit on the chilly side:( Most of the first wave of sailors had gone home but a couple on Wide Fanatic Slalom boards were whizzing all over the harbour so decided go give it another try but it was not windy enough for me now but couldn’t be bothered to rig the 7.8. So, after struggling now to stay upwind I decided to call it a day only to meet Mag going for a short walk along the prom - too miserable to go far! Back to the van to change and get a warming cuppa before packing up and heading off. We drove to the Poole end for a look as we haven’t been there for ages and were going to stop but with parking £2 an hour:( we carried on to the Studland chain ferry and drove straight on behind the double decker tourist bus. It was a bit of fun and only cost us £4.50. It is supposed to be better tomorrow and light winds and we are keen to check out Swanage so looked for somewhere to ‘wild camp’ but couldn’t find anywhere and ended up back at the Quarry. We had the place to ourselves and picked the spot at the back, not such a great view but more sheltered and quiet there, then it started to rain! Might get a sail at Portland on Sunday although now looking a little marginal before retuning the 117 back to Ken Barlett and heading north to pick up my new F2 Ride 282 another yellow bargain at £40 – I wonder how long this one will last????
